I don’t smoke or drink, which is why I don’t frequent clubs. You literally have to be intoxicated to enjoy today’s popular urban music in good conscience.
Music is supposed to evoke feeling and relay a message for the moment. That’s why music is the most popular form of entertainment (if not the only form) in church. The pastor will deliver a sermon, which is the message of the moment, and then the choir will reinforce the message through song. The choir is usually comprised of the most dedicated members of the congregation, and so ideally, they’re up on the message as well. This must be where the saying “You’re preaching to the choir” comes from. The choir should be the first line of affirmation behind the messenger (notice also, that the choir stands behind the pastor.)
However, whether you’re in the choir, or a general member of the congregation, you don’t come to church fucked up. Nobody sits at home on Sunday morning getting liquored up before they receive the message of the moment. Well I’m sure somebody, somewhere does, but that’s not the point. The point is: you don’t have to get fucked up before you go to church.
