Merry Christmas Fools!
Everybody is always asking me what I’m listening to, I guess the internet only works for me. A lot of people claim they don’t have time to find new music so they just listen to whatever they think everybody else is listening to- or don’t listen at all. On my end- it takes WAY to much time to beg everybody to listen to a tape or check out an artist, or even send out links to as...
Low Budget - "A Low Budget Christmas" →
Oh my God- a hip-hop Christmas! No more cheesy holiday songs in every store or on every station- this is tradition, remixed.
DJ K.O. - "Living Out a State of Mind, Vol. 1" →
After the incredible “Picture This” album, DJ K.O. vowed to release a new tape every month working with different emcees. Volume 1 has me looking forward to the rest as it didn’t disappoint. Vol. 2 should be live any day now…
Sean Price - "Kimbo Price" →
Sean uses media excerpts from Mike Tyson’s career while alluding to Ultimate Fighter Kimbo Slice. The theme works perfectly because whether you mess with Iron Mike, Kimbo Slice, or Sean P.- you get punched in the face… (Also note the play on the “Punchout” cover.)
Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa - "How Fly" →
This may have been my favorite mixtape of the year- and I don’t smoke weed… The beats and rhymes are all fresh, and these two emcees show you how to live life on the road and stay fly.
Chip tha Ripper - "The Cleveland Show" →
The Cleveland representer doesn’t use any excerpts from the popular Seth MacFarlane cartoon, but what goes down in Cleveland isn’t anything to laugh at. Also, that has to be my favorite cover of the year.
Skyzoo - "The Power of Words" →
If you frequent Tha 4.0 Show blog then you’ve heard of Brooklyn emcee Skyzoo. If you don’t, or you haven’t- here’s your chance. As he put it, he’s not tryna bring New York back. He’s bringing it forward.
J. Cole - "The Warm Up" →
Most people are familiar with J. Cole as one of Roc Nations newest artists, along with Wale. His featured verses on “Beautiful Bliss,” and “A Star is Born” served as an eye-opener for the sleep- and the NC native tells his story during “The Warm Up.”
Young Chris - "The Network" →
Most people might know him as 1/2 the Young Gunz from the Roc-a-fella days- but Hov’s protege has grown into one of the best doing it.
Wale - "Back to the Feature" →
Wale is dope. Whether you like skinny jeans or gangsta rap, gangstas rapping in skinny jeans- Wale can’t be denied… and he brought friends…
Wiz Khalifa - "Burn After Rolling" →
Wiz STAY releasing music! He stay smoking too…
Low Budget - "The Budget is Low" →
A collective of DMV producers and artists with a unique sound and style. I can’t overstate how well mixed this tape is- making it an ACTUAL mixtape…
Savant - "The Delayed Entry EP" →
This Chicago to Arizona emcee is a lyricist, and by the end of this joint- you’ll know.
Kenn Starr - "It's Still Real" →
Kenn Starr from the Low Budget Crew dropped this on us, late during the summer- just enough to keep you ready for “The Two Track Mind” collaboration with producer Black Milk.
Mr. Dent - "The Wack Loss Diet, Vol. 1" →
Chicago emcee Mr. Dent shows us how to work off all that wack that’s been in our system over the past few years. Chicagoans will certainly appreciate the flavor and subject matter of this tape.
Zo! - "Just Visiting Too" →
Zo!, a member of The Foreign Exchange band and producer, released an EP that sonned a lot of people’s best work in R&B and modern jazz. For old heads, you should appreciate the remakes and new takes on old records, and for the youth- this will give you something to vibe too when you put that Patron down.
Hall of Justus - "Reservoir Dogs" →
Rapper Big Pooh (of Little Brother,) Chaundon, Joe Scudda, and Jozeemo rip it over some seldom used instrumentals, and of course- that newness- it’s the HOJ way!
Beatnick & K-Salaam - "Where the Streets Have No... →
Beatnick & K-Salaam are well known for their fresh sounding remixes of classic hip-hop records. This tape features a nice balance of emcees and of course, gorgeous production.
Kidz in the Hall - "The Professional Leisure Tour" →
The theme throughout this tape is an angry girlfriend who stops receiving phone calls while her boyfriend is on tour in Europe. Some people just can’t handle the lifestyle…
Pac Div - "Church League Champions" →
The tape has a dope theme and introduces us to a nice collective of emcees who rap from a middle class black American perspective. EVERYONE should hear the song “Young Black Male.” It’s definitely worth requesting at your local radio stations as well.
Lupe Fiasco - "Enemy of the State" →
The original tape was set up like a cassette with only one long track. This is the version with the tracks split up as a CD would be. Definitely more iTunes friendly…
Lil Wayne - "No Ceilings" →
I still haven’t listened to it yet, but since everyone else has, you probably already know it’s punchline crazy.
